7 Tips for Looking after your Long Hair
There are plenty of different tips for looking after long hair. Long hair can be hard to manage, and you’ll want to look after it to keep it looking its best. Longer hair is prone to all sorts of damage like breakage and split ends. However, there are plenty of ways to make sure that your long locks stay in top condition. Check out the following tips for looking after long hair.
1. KNOW YOUR HAIR TYPE
One of the first tips for looking after long hair (or any length hair for that matter) is to use products designed for your hair type. Long hair can come in all sorts of conditions – normal, dry, thick, thin, curly, or straight. Different hair types might require different types of care and these days there are plenty of products designed for specific purposes. Choosing the right products for your hair type will keep it looking its best.
2. USE A QUALITY HAIRBRUSH
Look after your hair by investing in a good quality hair brush. Natural bristle brushes or brushes with rounded bristles are great options. You want a brush that is firm but gentle enough and that won’t pull or tug at your hair too much. A wide-tooth comb will also come in handy for detangling your hair.
3. LET YOUR HAIR DOWN
Tight, severe hairstyles can cause damage to your long hair. Avoid constantly putting your hair into tight ponytails or braids, and let your hair down whenever possible. If you still want to tie your hair back, try looser, less severe styles. If you want to keep your hair off your face, try pushing hair back with a head band. Also, never put your hair up into a ponytail while it’s still wet!
4. DRY IT NATURALLY
To keep your hair looking its best, air dry it whenever possible. Avoid rubbing or twisting your hair in a towel to dry it as this can cause damage to it. Instead, gently pat and squeeze out any excess moisture with a soft towel or piece of cotton. If you must use a hair dryer to dry your hair, select the cold setting or the lowest possible heat setting.
5. TRIM IT REGULARLY
Trimming your hair regularly is another tip to help keep your long locks looking their best. Aim to get your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks to remove split ends. Contrary to popular belief, regular trims won’t make your hair grow faster. However, your ends will look much neater.
6. CONDITION AND DETANGLE
Long hair is prone to knots and tangles. Keep your hair silky and smooth by using leave-in-conditioners or detangling treatments every now and then. You could also try combing your hair before you wash it, to minimise the risk of knots forming when you shampoo it. Also, when your hair is wet, detangle it by gently running a wide-toothed comb through it.
7. ACCESSORISE SMARTLY
The type of hair accessories you use are also worth thinking about. Avoid exposing your hair to any metal surfaces like metal pins and clips as they can tug at your hair and cause it to break. Always make sure your hair accessories are covered and coated. Also use snag-free hair bands for tying up your hair.
